JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The family of 19-year-old Emauri Hampton who was killed in a car accident on the way home from prom on Sunday morning is celebrating his life and legacy.

On the morning of Sunday, April 30th, around 4:10 am, Florida highway patrol says that 19-year-old Emauri Hapmton and a female passenger who is 18 were traveling north on Southside blvd, on their way home from Englewood highschool’s prom, when another car headed south crossed the median and hit them head-on. 19-year-old Emauri Hampton was killed in this crash.

Action News Jax’s Jimmy Marlow attended a vigil in Hampton’s memory and spoke with his family and friends.

Kadrea Gray, Emaui’s mother stated, “he was bright, he was a loving person, and everybody loved him. He was always smiling, and he was a nice person to everybody.”

Javaris Hampton told how he remembered his nephew as being a very good kid, respectful, humble, and liked everybody.

Two close friends of Emaui reflected on how he touched their lives.

“We always made sure each other were straight, he had my back I had his back. We could go to each other for anything and everything. It’s hard losing him,” Keyawn Hills said. “Even though I know he’s not here physically, mentally, and spiritually, he’ll always be by my side no matter what.”

Hampton’s family told action news Jax that he was a 2-way player on the football field and that he was dedicated to whatever he chose to do. They say he was in the process of choosing what college he would play football at after graduation.

“He was an A-B honor roll student, I never got any bad calls about him. People called me to say good things, your son is a nice student, he’s respectful. Everywhere I go, everybody loved him,” Kandrea Gray stated,

Though Hampton has passed away, his family and friends say that his legacy will live on through the impact that he had on others around him.

“He’s a leader, it’s showing. He’s not here and he’s still leading. He’s a leader all day every day,” Lakysha stated.

Action news jax has reached out to the Florida highway patrol for an update on the investigation of this accident, but has not gotten a response yet.
