Elementary school hit with gunfire during apparent shooting in Northwest Jacksonville

Jacksonville, FL — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says an active investigation is underway, following an apparent shooting in the Moncrief-area.

According to JSO, they were called just after 11:00 AM Wednesday, by the safe school officer at Saint Clair Evans Academy who reported hearing gunshots nearby, including some that hit the school's building.

Police say despite gunfire hitting the building and even one bullet shattering the window of a 3rd grade classroom, no students or staff were hurt.

JSO says their preliminary investigation revealed that several shots were fired in the area of 45th Avenue and Moncrief Road. Police say they are also investigating scenes for evidence on 41st Street.

Police say no arrests have been made at this time, but they have detained individuals for questioning.

The principal of Saint Clair Evans Academy says she wants parents to know they have 'actual heroes' at the school.

"Our teachers, faculty, and staff--they did everything they are trained to do and they kept all the students safe in that building. And that's what we do every day," says Lawanda Polydore.

Polydore says school on Thursday will go on as usual. She says the classroom that the bullet entered had just completed their FSA testing for the day, so this will not affect their scores.
