DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — UPDATE, 8/25/2021: In a move that surprises nearly no one, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer announced that Trevor Lawrence will officially be the Jaguars’ starting quarterback.

The team made it official on social media Wednesday morning.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, as well as National Insider for the NFL Network Ian Rapoport, both reported Lawrence will be starting for the Week 1 matchup on the road against the Houston Texans.

Jaguars reporter Ashlyn Sullivan said Meyer said “we felt he has earned it” of Lawrence’s performance thus far in training camp and two preseason games.

As of Thursday, Aug. 12, Meyer was still declining to name a starter, saying of former starting quarterback Gardner Minshew:

“He’s earned my respect. I love that guy. He’s a warrior competitor. He’s a fighter. I told him that. I just have great respect for Minshew. He brings it every day now, every day.”

The Jacksonville Jaguars have officially signed Trevor Lawrence as quarterback, the team announced Monday.

Action News Jax reported when the Cartersville, Georgia native and former Clemson star, who led the team to a national championship as a freshman in 2018, was selected by the Jags with the first overall pick of the 2021 draft.

A source told ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Lawrence signed a four-year $36.8 million contract that includes $24.1 million in guaranteed money and the standard fifth-year option.

Lawrence played in 40 games with 36 starts at Clemson from 2018 to 2020.

He finished his career with the Tigers undefeated as a starter in regular season play and did not lose a regular season game at either the high school or collegiate levels, the Jaguars said.

“For his career, Lawrence completed 758-of-1138 passes (66.6 percent) for 10,098 yards, 90 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He holds several school records, including career winning percentage (.944), pass efficiency rating (164.3) and yards per passing attempt (8.87). He is one of six quarterbacks in ACC history with at least 10,000 passing yards and the only quarterback in ACC history to win three ACC Championship Games. Lawrence added 231 rushes for 943 yards and 18 rushing TDs on the ground during his three years with the Tigers,” the Jaguars said in a statement.
