Football star Otis Anderson Jr.’s father told police his son ‘charged’ at him before fatal shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News Jax is learning new details about the fight that led to the fatal shooting of former University Christian and University of Central Florida football player Otis Anderson Jr.

We have obtained another copy of Otis Anderson Sr.’s arrest report from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, which has fewer portions redacted than the copy we obtained on Tuesday.

In the newly visible portions of the report, Anderson Sr. told police that “if he could do it again, he would ‘take the black eye.’”

On Tuesday, we told you that a dog bite at a North Jacksonville home was the catalyst for the fight between Anderson Jr. and his father, Anderson Sr.

Anderson Sr. told police he was bitten by his son’s girlfriend’s dog, causing injuries to his hands, according to the report.

This led to Anderson Sr. fighting with both Anderson Jr. and Anderson Sr.’s wife, Denise Anderson. At one point during their fight, Anderson Sr. told police that Anderson Jr. “‘bowed’ up at him and they got into a ‘pushing match,’” according to the report. Denise Anderson broke up the pushing match and Anderson Sr. went to the garage.

When Anderson Sr. went to the garage, he told police he retrieved his silver and black revolver.

Anderson Jr. and Anderson Sr. met in the kitchen. Anderson Sr. told police that Anderson Jr. “charged” at him, the report said. Anderson Jr. then said “you shot me,” according to the report.

Denise Anderson then began hitting Anderson Sr. with a Swiffer floor cleaning device, the report said.

Anderson Sr. told police he had no recollection of shooting at his wife or getting into a physical altercation with her “and then claimed she must have gotten in between” him and Anderson Jr., the report said.

Anderson Sr. told police multiple times that Anderson Jr. “had never disrespected him before his incident occurred,” and “if he could do it again, he would ‘take the black eye,’” the report detailed.

During his interview with police, Anderson Sr. “never advised (police that) the victim was armed or that he was in fear for his life, but advised multiple times that he had the right to defend himself.”

Anderson Sr. is currently in the Duval County Jail facing charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
