Atlantic Beach Police Department sends safety message to community about the popular game “Assassin”

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. — The Atlantic Beach Police Department is sending a safety message to the community and asking for parents to talk to their young ones about the popular game “Assassin.”

Teenagers are playing “Assassin,” also called “Killer” or “Gotcha,” a live-action game where players try to eliminate one another using fake weapons in an effort to become the last player standing.

Players dress up in military-type costumes and use weapons like nerf guns, squirt guns or other toy guns.

Atlantic Beach Police Department stated even though this seems like kids being kids, the game has the potential for things to go wrong.

“When this is played outside of a controlled setting on one’s private property, it can look like a very scary situation occurring, and a well-intended witness may try to intervene to help someone they thought was being victimized with a weapon,” the Atlantic Beach Police Department stated on a social media post.

The Police Department warned that some guns may look like real ones, especially when one cannot examine the gun more closely.

The Atlantic Beach Police Department asked that parents talk to their children about “what a BAD IDEA this game is.”

They also asked residents to be observant and call the police immediately if they see something resembling the game.
