Duval County School Board approves more testing for students

It looks like your child can expect a few more tests starting next school year.

The Duval County School Board voted Tuesday to approve adding two more tests to the curriculum.

But these new tests won't be state-mandated, instead the national exams are designed to see how ready students are for college.

Under the plan, all 7th and 10th graders will take the Preliminary SAT, also known as the PSAT, which allows students to qualify for national merit scholarships.

Meanwhile all high school juniors will take the ACT college entrance exam, as will any senior who failed the state's Algebra I and 10th grade English tests.

The tests come with no extra costs for parents or students, but the school board expects to spend about $500,000 a year.
