Decision on lifting restrictions at Duval beaches “close” according to Jax Mayor

Jacksonville FL — Another step towards a sense of normalcy in Duval County could soon happen. During a press conference Monday, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said a decision on lifting restrictions at Duval County beaches was close. He says making the decision isn't about meeting benchmarks, but about having the right resources in place to control crowds and to mitigate the risk of the virus.

“I’d say we’re getting close to lifting the restrictions on what you can do on the beach.” Curry says.

Currently Duval County beaches are open from 6AM until 8PM just for exercising and social distancing guidelines still have to be followed.

In St. Johns County restrictions at beaches have eased up as of Monday. Social distancing guidelines still have to be practiced, but the beaches are open for more than just exercising. Beaches in Nassau County and Fernandina Beach are now open for activities other than exercising, but there is no driving on the beaches, camping or horseback riding.

Curry says he’s taking with the mayors at the beaches about the decision to lift restrictions daily.
