Corrections employee arrested after co-worker claims rape in Baker County

An employee at Union Correctional Institution says she was raped by a co-worker, after she agreed to give him a ride home from a party in Jacksonville, according to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.

Matthew Raymond Campbell, 22, now faces a charge of sexual battery on someone 18 or older, after he was questioned and arrested in Baker County, according to the offense report.

BCSO says the woman came forward Sept. 20 to describe the events of Sept. 9, when she says Campbell asked for a ride to his house. According to the report, Campbell then asked to instead go play video games at the victim's home in Macclenny, and that's where the woman says the situation escalated to kissing, grabbing and unwanted sex.

She says she told him to stop and was hit multiple times during the encounter, according to the report.  The report further says the victim provided photos of bruises that the Sheriff's Office says back up her story that she was forcibly held down and choked during the rape. BCSO says the victim also showed them a conversation she had online with Campbell after the attack, during which he apologized for what happened.

Campbell was asked to come to the Sheriff's Office, where he gave his side of the story, initially saying that the victim asked him to "at least wear a condom if you are going to do this," according to the report. He says she even left the room to get one for him. The woman denied that and said she only moved from the couch to the bedroom because she was demanded to do so and complied out of fear, according to the report.

BCSO says, after questioning, Campbell admitted to forcing himself on the victim, saying he had tried to do the same thing once before when he was younger.

Campbell was arrested after his interview.
