Convicted murderer named as suspect in fatal beating in Duval Jail

Jacksonville, FL — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has now named 43-year-old Paul Dixon as the man accused of killing one of his cellmates at the Duval County Jail.

The death happened Tuesday on the fifth floor, east wing, where JSO says inmates who are already sentenced are held. Those inmates are generally awaiting transfer to the state prison or temporarily in the Jail for court proceedings. Police say Dixon and two other men were in the cell, at the time of the murder.

Dixon’s arrest report says the third cellmate reported that Dixon and the victim were in some kind of argument, which escalated to a physical altercation. Police say Dixon beat the victim, leading to that man’s death. JSO says they do have surveillance camera footage that shows “valuable evidence”.

JSO says Dixon was at the Jail for local court proceedings. He was previously convicted of a murder which he committed when he was 17 years old.

Dixon’s arrest report says he declined to speak with police, and instead invoked his right to counsel. He has been arrested for murder.

The inmate who was killed has not yet been publicly identified by JSO, however police say they have informed that man’s family.
