If you’re traveling for Labor Day weekend or any weekend in general, you may need to rent a car for the weekend, which can be pricy. Our Consumer Warrior Clark Howard says rentals get cheaper, the closer you get to your travel date.
Clark suggests getting a rental immediately after booking your flight. That way, you have a car book, you know the price and there’s no fee to cancel if you find a cheaper price.
After that, Clark says to put your rental on the website Autoslash, which will automatically re-shop your rental week after week and let you know if there’s a lower price.
Clark adds, “the week out from a trip, I always re-shop my car rental manually, because, routinely, the car rental price that I booked when I booked my airline ticket, will fall to as little as a third of the price I originally booked when I get close to my travel date.”
