As Clay deputy recovers from crash, driver involved gets cited

Clay County Motorycle Deputy Ron Jankowski Clay County Motorycle Deputy Ron Jankowski continues to recover, after being seriously hurt in an April crash.

There’s still no timeline for when Clay County Sheriff’s Office Motorcycle Deputy Ron Jankowski will return to work, but WOKV has now confirmed that the driver involved in the crash that seriously hurt Jankowski has been cited.

Clay County court records show 77-year-old Lowell Jackson faces a count of improper lane change, for allegedly pulling in front of Jankowski and causing the crash. The Florida Highway Patrol- which is the lead agency in this crash investigation- says both men were heading westbound on Kingsley, and Jankowski had his emergency lights engaged. CCSO says Jankowski was responding to a traffic crash at the time of the collision he was involved in.

The crash was in April, but the formal court docket opened May 24th. The citation shows the civil penalty is $164.

The crash report shows Jackson told FHP that he never saw Jankowski. FHP says they determined this to be the appropriate citation for this crash in part because there was no criminal intent that led to the crash. FHP is not considering any other charges.

Jackson has had several previous civil traffic matters. In 2016 he was cited for cutting across to avoid a traffic control device, and he completed driving school, while pleading “no contest”. Nobody was hurt as a result of that infraction. He also has several seatbelt infractions, was found to be driving a vehicle in unsafe condition in 2000 and 2006, and failed to obey a traffic control device in 1998.

CCSO tells WOKV Jankowski is “progressing, slowly but surely” in his recovery from multiple physical injuries that resulted from this crash. There is no timeline currently for when he will return to work.
