Clay County Schools to recommend police chief for new department today

After we told you earlier this month when the Clay County School Board approved a new district police department we're going to get some new details on the decision Tuesday afternoon. Clay Schools says Superintendent Addison Davis will be recommending someone to lead the new department as well as updating the logistics and timeline. Florida law requires security at all schools following the Parkland school shooting in February 2018.

Through the school year, the district relied on the Clay County Sheriff's Office, Green Cove Springs and Orange Park Police Departments to comply with the law. Under the new plan the district would continue to partner with Green Cove Springs and Orange Park Police but move away from CCSO in favor of their own employees.

Under the new department, the district has committed to hiring 47 staff members in total.

WOKV will be bringing you updates on this announcement through out the day.
