Clark Howard: Wait until January to return your holiday gifts

Jacksonville, FL — Whether it was the wrong size, a duplicate, or it just wasn’t on the list…returning holidays gifts is nothing new.

Consumer Warrior Clark Howard says those considering returning their gifts should wait at least a week or two before trekking out to the stores. Chances are the stores are packed with people also trying to return items or shopping around after getting cash or gift cards for the holidays.

"The week between Christmas and New Year's used to be a favorite quiet shopping week and now because of all the gift cards people got at Christmas, it's a huge week."

Clark says it’s best to try and go to the store about a week after New Year’s Day because the lines are expected to be shorter and there will be better deals. Clark says that way someone can return the item and possibly use the money or store credit for something a deeply discounted rate.
