City of Jacksonville still planning New Year’s Celebration as Jacksonville Landing is demolished

Jacksonville FL — Since the Jacksonville Landing is currently being demolished, last year was the final New Year’s Eve celebration at the once-popular downtown destination.

But the city says it’s still planning to ring in the New Year with fireworks.

Jerry Thode lives in downtown Jacksonville and for the last couple of years, he’s enjoyed watching the fireworks at the Landing. Now that it’s being demolished, he’s going to have to find another place to watch them.

"I have no idea now. I have no idea where I’m going to go," Thode said.

City officials say they’re still planning to ring in the new year with fireworks over the St. Johns River.

This year, people can watch the fireworks by the Double Tree and Hyatt hotels and near the Acosta Bridge.

City officials said people can also watch the fireworks from the Northbank and Southbank right along the river.

On Monday, the city told Action News Jax it is working with a contractor to see if they can keep the walkway between the water and the Landing open and make sure it’s safe to view the fireworks.

The city wants to make sure that everyone stays safe with the construction taking place.

Still, people such as Thode are going to miss seeing the fireworks at The Landing as they have every year.

“It’s a shame they’re going to tear this down. A lot of people come out here to watch the fireworks and the Christmas lights down here,” Thode said.

Friendship Fountain is another area people can watch the fireworks, as well as Brooklyn and under the Fuller Warren Bridge, where the Riverside Arts Market is typically held.
