City councilman declares today as Workers Memorial Day

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The 9th Annual Workers Memorial Day Observance Ceremony, hosted by Northeast Florida Safety Council, honored 18 workers who died in the workplace in 2022.

Jacksonville City Councilman Nick Howland presented a proclamation that honors those who have lost their lives as well as recognizes April 28th as Worker’s Memorial Day in Jacksonville.

“Well, the real crux of the issue is that workers’ safety and safer working conditions and safer workplaces is a cultural thing it should be government it should be employers it should be employees we should all strive to make our workplaces safer for workers,” Howland says.

Doug Parker, the Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration had his own story to tell about losing a loved one. “Many years ago, I had I lost a loved one My wife in an accident.” He went on to say, “We also want to encourage all employers to go beyond just complying with the rules but to have real health and safety management systems in the workplace.”
