Cecil Airport receives $1.2 Million grant for improvements

Jacksonville FL — Cecil Airport on Jacksonville’s far westside is getting a funding boost from the federal government to make improvements at the airport. The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that Cecil Airport was one of the airports in the country to receive funding from the third allotment in the $3.18 Billion from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program. According to the Jacksonville Aviation Authority the $1.2 Million grant to Cecil will go towards installing airfield guidance signs and rehabilitating part of the longest runway at the airport. Originally it was released by the Federal Aviation Administration that Cecil was receiving $2 Million, but JAA says that figure was part of their pre-application request. JAA says after adjustments were made $1.2 Million was the actual request. JAA says the runway project is expected to begin on November 19th and will take a total of 210 days to complete. Meanwhile, JAA says they expect to start putting in the new LED signs that will help guide pilots at any time of day or weather condition in August or September. JAA says that project is expected to take 120 days. JAA says these projects are extremely important to the operations at Cecil Airport and will help them in the future by providing safe infrastructure for increased air traffic.

Cecil isn’t the only airport in Northeast Florida to receive money from the Airport Improvement Program. The FAA says in late June, Jacksonville International Airport received $975,000 for improvements to a service road and a taxiway. Fernanadina Beach Municipal Airport also received $148,000 to improve drainage as well as install lighting and rehabilitate a runway.

Then in early June, the FAA says Northeast Florida Regional Airport in St. Augustine received $225,000 for improving drainage and installing lighting and rehabilitating the taxiway.
