Jacksonville, FL. — Both pedestrians and bicyclists will soon have a safer way to cross the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge on Atlantic Boulevard.
Starting July 6, the Florida Department of Transportation will begin a $2.2 million project installing bicycle lanes and sidewalks on the westbound side of the bridge. The eastbound side of the bridge will also get bicycle lanes.
The project is expected to be complete early 2018. Crews will be working during the week with some occasional weeknight and weekend work. Daytime lane closures will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. FDOT says there will be no lane closures during peak driving times Monday through Friday or during holidays or special events.
The north side of the westbound span of the bridge will see new 8-feet wide bicycle lanes and 6-feet wide sidewalks adjacent to the outside cement barrier wall. A new 32” cement barrier wall will be installed separating the two.
The current three 12-feet travel lanes on the westbound span will be reduced one foot each to accommodate the wider shoulders of the road. In addition, bicycle lanes will be striped in the existing 10- feet shoulders on the eastbound span.
For extra safety, both the west and eastbound spans of the bridge will have a 1-foot/6-inch aluminum rail installed on top the existing cement barrier walls. Sidewalks will also repair where needed and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) ramps will be installed at the crossings.
The project also includes installing underground fiber optic cable on Atlantic Boulevard from San Pablo Road to Mayport Road. The purpose of the fiber optic cable will be to improve ITS (Intelligent Traffic System) communications between the traffic signals along the road, providing more accurate traffic control information.
