‘Audacious Faith in the Future:’ 38th annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast held by City of Jacksonville & civil rights groups

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — “Audacious faith in the future:”

That’s the message of this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast held at the Prime Osborn Convention Center in Downtown Jacksonville, but also a guiding message once given by Dr. King himself – and a call to action for equality and progress in our nation and city of Jacksonville.

“We keep on fighting,” highlighted Jacksonville civil rights leader Rodney Hurst after Friday’s breakfast. “Because if we don’t fight, nothing gets done.”

Friday morning’s event marks the 38th annual MLK breakfast by the city of Jacksonville, but just the second year now since the city, the Jacksonville branch NAACP, Jacksonville Urban League, and the Jax Chamber all united under one roof for a single, unified event. The groups each held their own separate events from 2019 up until last year.

Now, Hurst says the message of unity is more important than ever in our nation and right here in the river city.

“It shows what unity and togetherness can accomplish, as opposed to being separated and throwing rocks at each other,” Hurst explained to Action News Jax Friday morning.

The annual event serving as a chance each and every year to be reminded in the message of Dr. King, all he stood for, and of his guiding principles we can take into our daily lives beyond just an annual breakfast, or even Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“Now, that we are recognizing Martin Luther King’s day, then we cannot sit back as if that was the end all be all. We still have to keep on working,” said Hurst.

Hurst said the way forward now, is to continue the fight for equality that Dr. King started and gave his life for so many decades ago.
