JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Lanes of Interstate 95 northbound near Jacksonville International Airport are reopening after the Florida Highway Patrol said a commercial vehicle hit the Airport Road overpass.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post the three inside lanes of I-95 NB are open, but the exit ramp to Airport Road “continues to be closed for an undetermined length of time.”

The Florida Department of Transportation went to inspect the overpass.

FDOT said in a statement to Action News Jax, “They’re clearing lanes now. Should be good very soon but that backup is going to be there throughout the evening.”

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said no traffic can go under I-95 on Max Leggett Parkway/Airport Road in either direction.

On the southbound side of I-95, the Airport Road exit is open, JSO said.

FDOT said a permanent repair will need to be made to the overpass.

The insured driver will have to cover expenses, so the repair won’t affect taxpayers, FDOT said.

Crews are clearing concrete debris from the roadway underneath, which is Max Leggett Parkway.

FDOT has cleared cars to drive on the I-95 overpass, as the strength of the bridge is in the rebar connected to the concrete, which was not hit.

Crews will wrap the beam in a blanket as a temporary fix, FDOT said.
