People with pollen allergies are starting to suffer in Northeast Florida, so we asked the director of the Florida Department of Health in Duval County if wearing a facemask outside can help ease some of the issues.
“Wearing a mask should help give a measure of protection because it will prevent those allergens from getting into the nose and mouth because the mask acts as a barrier,” says Dr. Pauline Rolle.
She says it’s important to remember if you wear a mask outdoors to protect yourself against the pollen, the pollen is getting trapped on the outside of the mask. That’s why it’s extremely important to take your mask off properly.
“Grab them by the ear loops,” she says. “Don’t touch the front of the mask.”
She says if you aren’t careful, the pollen will go right back into the air and possibly into your nose or mouth.
