Two Clay County Sheriff's Office Detectives were shot, one was killed in Middleburg Thursday evening after going to a home of a suspected meth lab.
See video from the scene here.
Sheriff Rick Beseler identified the detective killed as 35-year-old David White, an Army veteran. He died from a gunshot wound to the head. The second detective was taken to Orange Park Medical Center where he underwent surgery. Both detectives were wearing protective vests at the time of the shooting.
At a news conference Friday, Sheriff Beseler identifed the shooter as 36-year-old Ted Tilley.
The shooting occured on Alligator Boulevard off of Blanding around 6:30 p.m. Tilley was shot and killed by officers who responded for back-up. Five others were at the house at the time, but only one was arrestd. Police arrested 16-year-old Jeffrey Daniels on possession of a controlled substance without a valid prescription.
Besler says this is the first time an officer has been killed in the line of duty for almost 40 years, also calling it a very dark and sad day for his agency.
Tammy Delgado and her mother, Carron Peavey, came out to the scene before work to bring the officers a little something for breakfast.
"We heard about it last night and we just felt for all the officers," says Peavey.
"We brought sausage biscuits to all the officers and people out here," says Delgado. She says it was the least she and her mother could do knowing these officers had been at the scene all night lamenting on the colleague and brother they lost, and the father and husband that his family lost.
"His family has to go through this...these two young children without a dad? It sucks," says Delgado.
Besler says White leaves behind a 3-month old, a 2-year-old, and family.
