Jaguars In Prime Time 3 Times in 2008

The Jaguars' playoff run in 2007 has put the spotlight on them in 2008. The NFL schedule, released by the league today, has the Jaguars playing 3 games in prime time, including a home game against the Steelers on Sunday night football October 5, a road game at Houston December 1, and a Thursday night affair at home against Indianapolis December 18, the next to last game of the regular season.

Here's the full schedule

Here is my list of the top 10 things the Jaguars will need to do this off- season:

1. Sign David Garrard to an extension - DONE It is the top priority, as far as I'm concerned. Garrard was the catalyst for the Jaguars improvement on offense. He's the quarterback for the future...and the present. He has just one more year remaining on his contract. Get it done.

2. Capitalize on the Playoffs. This is really more about the front office than the team. The excitement that the Jaguars produced must be translated into dollars. This means three areas: season ticket sales, club seat sales, and finding a naming rights partner for the stadium.

3. Get younger on the defensive line-DONE The Jaguars strength in the past had been the defense, most of it centered around Marcus Stroud and John Henderson. This year, the Jaguars best linemen were Rob Meier and Paul Spicer. The core group of defensive linemen for the Jaguars (Henderson, Stroud, Meier, Spicer, Reggie Hayward, Grady Jackson, Bobby McCray) average over 30 years old. That's a warning flag. And Stroud, and Hayward have big red flags for injuries.

4. Upgrade the pass defense-DONE The weakest spot for the Jaguars this year was in the pass defense. Some of that goes to a lack of pass rush at times. Some of it goes to a rookie free safety, Reggie Nelson, who was learning on the fly. Some of it can be attributed to the early injury to Gerald Sensabaugh. So the question is, do the Jaguars have to make personnel changes in order to be better against the pass?

5. Replace cherry-picked coaches-DONE There are bound to be some assistants who take jobs elsewhere. There almost always are when you have success. There are rumors that offensive assistant Mike Tice is a candidate in Miami, quarterback's coach Mike Shula could get a coordinators job and defensive coordinator Mike Smith was a candidate in Atlanta. There may be others. Jack Del Rio did a superb job of hiring assistants last off-season after he fired most of his offensive and special teams coaches. Now, he'll have to replace guys he wanted...can he hit the jackpot again.
