UNF receives extortion threat

Jacksonville, FL — State and federal law enforcement is investigating an extortion threat that was emailed to the University of North Florida.

A crime alert from UNF says they immediately contacted the FBI and Florida Department of Law Enforcement about the threat. The alert says the threat has been deemed “likely non-credible”, but is being investigated to identify those responsible.

The UNF alert further says many other colleges and universities have received a similar email extortion.

WOKV reached out to UNF for more information about the threat, but our questions were deferred to the FBI. A statement from the FBI’s Jacksonville office says they’re actively investigating.

“As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety,” the statement says.

The FBI says they can’t comment any further at this time.
