Two outbreaks of Influenza-like illness reported in Nassau County

Eight outbreaks of flu, influenza-like illness, and respiratory syncytial virus were reported in Florida last week, including two outbreaks of ILI in Nassau County.

The Florida Department of Health figures for December 10-16 show an outbreak at an elementary school and at a long-term care facility.

At the elementary school, six students were reported with ILI, with one sample so far testing positive for influenza B. It’s unclear if the students were vaccinated. 15 residents and four staff members of the long-term care facility were reported with ILI, and two people tested have come back positive for influenza A. One of the residents had to be hospitalized as a result of the illness. The facility reported 85 residents and 55 staff had been vaccinated.

Infection control measures have been reviewed with the leadership of the long-term care facility and leadership in the school. Both investigations by FDOH are still ongoing.

FDOH says nearly all outbreaks this season have been at facilities serving people at risk for complications, which includes children and the elderly. FDOH says, based on the data currently available about outbreaks that have taken place, this flu season may be more severe.

The state says peak activity for the flu season is yet to come, but they’re already recording increased flu and ILI activity among all age groups, compared to previous seasons. Health officials say it’s not too late to get your flu shot to try to prevent the spread of this illness. FDOH is also asking you to stay home if you’re sick and always use good hand washing practices.
