Jacksonville, FL — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says a 17-year-old has been shot while walking in front of an elementary school.
JSO says the victim was walking north on Lansdowne Drive, when he was shot multiple times. The victim went on to the campus of Parkwood Heights Elementary to seek cover, according to JSO. A window at Parkwood Heights appears to have been damaged in the shooting, but Duval County Public School Police say nobody in the building was hurt.
The Duval County School District says the injuries to the student were not life threatening.
There’s no clear suspect information at this point, except that police say the suspect was in a silver sedan. JSO is speaking with witnesses and the victim in an effort to learn more.
DCPS immediately put Parkwood Heights, Terry Parker High, and Arlington Middle on code red lockdown because of the police activity. The DCPS Police Chief says the shooting was right near their headquarters, so they were able to quickly respond to secure the schools. They immediately post at the entrance of the schools- to make sure nobody can get inside- and then add more positions as officers continue to respond. They also engaged JSO for assistance.
The Interim Duval Superintendent says all of the procedures- both for the lockdown and the modified dismissals- ran exactly as they should. Parkwood Heights students were taken to Terry Parker for dismissal, where students who walk to school were being held and buses and cars were being released incrementally. There were some bus delays affecting Arlington, Arlington Heights, and Fort Caroline Elementary as well.
