Man carjacks teen girl, later dies after getting shot by police

Jacksonville, Fl. — A fourteen-year-old girl is safe and her family, after what any parent could call their worst nightmare happened in Jacksonville’s Hyde Park neighborhood.

The teen girl was sitting in the driver’s seat of a car talking on the phone with a family member when a man with a bandana over his face. He pointed a gun at the child and demanded money which she told him she didn’t have any at the time.

"He then pushed over to the passenger's side of the car and got into the driver's seat and drove with her in the car," says Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Director Ron Lendvay.

The suspect drove for about a mile before pushing the girl from the car. The car had a satellite tracking device and police tag teamed with the company that created the device, and they were able to locate the stolen car at the intersection of Lane and San Juan Avenue.

Police then blocked the car as the company of the GPS device worked to remotely disable the car.

"The suspect exited the car with a firearm in his hand and did not follow commands to drop his weapon as he crossed the roadway. When he turned to the two officers with the gun in his hand, both officers opened fire and the suspect was struck," Lendvay says.

Police tended to the man’s injuries until he was transported to the hospital where he later died.

This is a developing story, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will give further details in a briefing on Tuesday. Refresh for updates.
