| Reaction to Prop. Tax Passage | |
| Tuesday's passage of Amendment One was a big blow to local leaders. It was a case where Mayor John Peyton, first responders and teachers won the local battle but lost the statewide war. More than half of Duval County voters rejected property tax reform but 64% of voters across Florida said YES on One. Mayor Peyton predicts a $60 million short-fall as a result of the measure. "I think the cuts that are going to be required are going to do irreparable damage to this county". Peyton left the firefighters hall last night with his head bowed and a bit surprised. "We'll do what's required, we'll present a balanced budget". This is of course a big win for the majority of homeowners and Governor Charlie Crist, staking much of his political capital on cutting property taxes. |
