Navy OK's Nuclear Carrier at Mayport

Naval Station Mayport will be the future home of a nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

Senator Bill Nelson's office confirms to WOKV that an environmental impact study by the Navy indicates there is no reason Mayport could not handle a nuclear carrier once dredging is completed and the wharf is upgraded.

Multiple sources in Washington, D.C. and Jacksonville are telling WOKV that a year-long report that could recommend an aircraft carrier be homeported at Mayport will be released today.

State Parks May Close

(AP)  State officials are considering closing 19 Florida state parks temporarily in 2009 for financial reasons.

Earlier this fall, Gov. Charlie Crist asked all state agencies to come up with a way to cut 10 percent of their operating costs from their proposed 2009-10 budget requests.

(AP)--The head of Florida's environmental agency announced a plan for Northeast Florida's cities and utilities to spend more than $600 million helping the St. Johns River.

The administrative hearing surrounding a permit to allow Seminole county to withdraw water from the St. Johns River starts today.  The St. Johns Riverkeeper, Neil Armingeon, says they've raised about $175,000 towards this fight that is expected to last a couple of weeks.
