Florida's Offshore Drilling Debate DOA?

Offshore? Off limits?
The drilling debate seems dead, baby, dead.
Two years ago it was a political rallying cry. Crowds chanted "drill, baby drill" in reference to expanding oil drilling including offshore. Florida political leaders debated expanding access of our coast.
But now the issue will probably not even be discussed in the upcoming session of the state legislature. The session starts on Tuesday.
State senator Stephen Wise sponsored a drilling bill last year.
"I had the bill last year to do that. And it just didn't get any traction it just wasn't the right time," Wise said it is important to talk about the issue and look for ways to become less dependent on foreign oil.
Democratic representative Audrey Gibson opposes expanded drilling, but said even if it does come up it is unlikely to be a big deal.
"We met about it in a select committee but I am not sure it is going to take center stage," Gibson said.
But the politics of the upcoming election make is very unlikely that any drilling bill will be on the table this time around.
Current law bans drilling in Florida coastal waters which is three miles into the Atlantic and ten miles into the gulf.
Tourism and environmental groups warn that allowing drilling any closer would endanger Florida's natural resources and beaches.

What others are saying

  • Looks like...
....Mr. Hess has no problem forwarding the talking points of tourism and environmental advocates. Let's face it - it is easier to repeat than to report.

"Tourism and environmental groups warn that allowing drilling any closer would endanger Florida's natural resources and beaches."

They say it, Hess repeats it, that settles it.

Next time, perhaps Mr. Hess could ask the tourism and environmental advocates a few tough questions and - you know - do his job.

    Like these:

Why does it take so long to fight the legal battle from concept to functioning oil rig?

Question: How much to the price of each gallon of oil do these lawsuits add?

Question: Do the opponents of offshore drilling have a carbon-intensive lifestyle?

Question: How much oil is spilled from rigs vs how much seeps into the ocean naturally?

Question: How many jobs would it produce?

Question: What would happen if one of our oil tankers were sunk in the Straits of Hormuz?

Mr. Hess, there is a start. Do your job and stop swabbing rumps.

  • Near shore drilling
This entire proposition is a scam of immense proportions - it would generate very few jobs, if any, and the potential benefit of $2 billion in revenue (that's WAY down the road) would threaten the $55 billion coastal tourism industry. Study the details before you support something as serious as this - there's a lot more to it than the sound bites you get on the evening news.
  • Offshore Drilling
I would like to see off shore drilling back on the agenda for this legislative session. It would help relieve our dependence on foreign energy and bring some jobs to Florida. Sounds like a win-win to me.
  • Gas prices
If Representative Gibson does not want us to use the gas off our coast line, what is she planning to do for us when gas prices increase?
