Accused Nursing Home Thief Fired
A woman accused of stealing from people in a nursing home has appeared in court.
44-year old Sharon Kaiser is charged with grand theft and exploiting the elderly. Police say the woman was stealing blank checks from the residents and then giving them to other people to be cashed.
Three other people, not nursing home employees, have been arrested and police are looking for a fourth.
Kaiser has been fired from the nursing home.
Kaiser worked at the Cypress Village retirement community off Butler Boulevard until late last year.
"We were assured by Dr. Felix that it was a safe environment, that all employees had a background check," said Jack Slaughter, whose mother was a resident. He said she lost thousands in jewelry.
Kaiser is not named as a suspect in Slaughter's case, but he said it is clear there's a larger problem at the facility.
"We went to the authorities at Cypress Village and informed them of what my mom was telling us, and we were led to believe that it could be paranoia brought on by her Alzheimer's disease," Slaughter said.
The facility's executive director said Kaiser was the only employee involved and was on suspension since Dec. 3. She was fired on Monday, the same day she turned herself into police.
