River City Crime Way Down in 2009
2009 is Jacksonville is almost over and it is shaping up to be one of the safest in a long time.
After more than nearly 150 murders last that number dropped to just over 100. Crime has decreased in the River City despite predicted increases because of the recession.
"We have gone back to 1989. Our total part one crimes are on track to be the lowest we have had in over 20 years," Sheriff John Rutherford said.
That includes rape, robbery and other violent crimes. All violent crimes are down more than 15%. Crime overall is also down.
"Overall crime is down 10.78%" Rutherford said.
He said that is a surprising result considering the recession but still considers it far to high an amount of crime.
He credits the Jacksonville Journey, Operation Safe Streets, more officers on the streets, and a tougher State Attorney with the improvement. He said if we continue on this track the city will continue to get safe next year.

What others are saying
- Jacksonville JourneyPoor Dianne... Do you really believe that bogus report? how about the one that came out just a week or so ago that indicated that the Jacksonville Journey was responsible for a 22% reduction in crime, and EVERY day since it came out, there has been at least one or two murders to PROVE it was incorrect beyond a shadow of a doubt! I think someone downtown has been reading my posts in this forum and this entity has been making changes in their statistics all of a sudden....... Yes it is a good report, it reads like a good story, politicians fog the truth all the time to suit teir OWN purposes NOT OURS, and I for one doubt it's accuracy even more.... Do you?
- Jax Crime DownThat is a great report. I'm surprised and pleased. Maybe we can make it even less next year!
