An aircraft carrier that once called Mayport home could soon be turned into a museum or memorial.

Known to many as "Big John," the USS John F. Kennedy is being offered up to government agencies and nonprofit groups that pledge to use the ship as a museum or memorial. But Pat Dolan with the Navy says there's a strict evaluation process that applicants will have to go through.

"All of those plans are evaluated to determine who has the most sound plan, so it's a competitive process," says Dolan.

All bids are due by January 22nd. The 1,050 foot vessel will travel from it's current port in Philadelphia to its new home once a new location is selected.

The JFK began service with the Navy in 1968. It once carried a 4,600 member crew and 70 combat aircrafts. It was decommissioned and left Mayport in 2007.
