St. Johns District Bucking Trend of Declining Enrollment
The first day of class in St. Johns County saw an additional 1,200 students over last year's figure. That's a 5% increase.
Attendance counts will continue to be monitored during the next two weeks, when student enrollment traditionally increases.
See which schools saw the most growth:
High school enrollment was 8,407, with 1,481 students at Bartram Trail High School, 1,409 at Nease High School, 1,383 at Pedro Menendez High School and 1,493 at St. Augustine High School.
Both Creekside High School (CHS) and Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS) have senior classes for the first time this year. The first day enrollment at CHS was 1,384, with 1,257 students enrolled at PVHS.
There were also 269 students enrolled at St. Johns Technical High School (SJTHS). SJTHS is located on the campus of First Coast Technical College and offers students academic studies combined with career and vocational training.
Middle school enrollment totaled 6,436, with student headcounts ranging from 594 at Sebastian Middle School to 1,242 at Fruit Cove Middle School. The other first day enrollment figures were Landrum Middle School with 1,130, Murray Middle School with 614, Pacetti Bay Middle School with 732, Rogers Middle School with 867 and Switzerland Point Middle School with 960. Liberty Pines Academy, the district's first permanent K-8 school, had a first day headcount of 959.
The elementary school population totaled 11,577; however, this count includes less than 25 percent of the kindergarten population since schools stagger the kindergarten start date over a five-day period. Another 163 students are enrolled at the district's alternative and charter schools.
"Even with our elementary and middle school principals housed at their area high schools during most of the summer, this was the smoothest opening in the seven years I have been here," reported Dr. Joseph Joyner, Superintendent of Schools. "All of our schools held orientations before school started so students came well prepared and ready to learn on the first day. I couldn't be prouder of our principals, teachers and staff, and we're also very appreciative of our parent volunteers, especially on the first day of school."
