Saft Gets Grant For Cecil Plant
Battery manufacturer Saft gets nearly 100-million dollars from the federal government to set up a new plant at Cecil Field.
The U.S. Department of Energy is giving a $95.5 million grant for Saft America to build a high-tech battery plant at Cecil Commerce Center on Jacksonville's Westside.
Mayor John Peyton has already put together a bill for City Council to open the land for the plant and provide some additional incentives.
"That combined with the revenue grants and county wide economy development funds, will allow Jacksonville to be competitive and attract close to 200-million dollars in capitol investments and close to 400 jobs," Peyton said.
He said Saft could pick another town if the council does not approve the legislation.
Saft plans to manufacture lithium-ion cells, modules and battery packs at the Jacksonville plant for military, industrial and agricultural vehicles, according to the U.S. Department of Energy announcement.
