The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is under fire for putting up a billboard on Atlantic Boulevard, which seems to compare overweight women to whales.

The billboard reads "save the whales, lose the blubber" and urges people to become vegetarians. It also shows a picture of an overweight woman in a bathing suit.

But a PETA spokeswoman told our news partner Channel 4, it's not about making people feel bad.  "People are bombarded with ads for food that make them fat and unhappy."

PETA says the billboard is taking a humorous approach to grabbing people's attention.

    Note: Whales are not vegetarians.

It is amazing that people, pay attention to an organization of nutcases called PETA.

If someone advocates PETA, I simply never listen or watch anything they have to say again, ummm unless it's an attractive PETA female nut taking off their clothes in public.

    YEAH I'm an ANIMAL:D

Peta is doing what is always does trying to get our attention like a child. Children many times will do anything good or bad attention is attention. The ad is rude and fat isn't always because of eating meat or lack of exercise, yes those in the medical field do know at times is due to unaddressed health issues. I for one am sad that they have used sex and now fat to get attention. Animals do deserve better so do others even fat people.
  • PETA
This is nothing more than an attempt to draw attention to their organization. An attempt that does nothing more than disgust me and totally turns to me off to their cause. Their over the top, attention grabbing, greed to be heard ranks right up there with eating animals. But then again, since it's only HUMANS they are attempting to shame and humiliate, they could care less.

Dave you're an idiot! Obesity is not linked with eating meat, it's from lack of exercise. Peta had no right to compare overweight women to whales becuase they eating meat. Meat is GOOD!!!
    People Eating Tasty Animals! =D

Keep your laws off my lunch
  • PETA
I think PETA and other Liberal groups need to stop telling others how to live their own lives, or try dictating what choice they make for themselves.
  • PETA
I know quite a few vegatarians and several are quite fat. It's not about eating too much meat, it's about eating too many calories.
  • PETA
Not everyone is fat because they eat meat...I am 5'6" and 130 lbs. I eat red meat, chicken, pork, etc. It's all delicious. PETA means PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS! To each their own.
  • Great AD
I agree with this 100%. People need to stop ignoring the fact of obesity and being overweight. Its not healthy and will lead to your children usually having a similar lifestyle and low self esteem. Its sad.
