Child Dies in NW Jacksonville House Fire
Some time around 4:30pm on Thursday, a child came screaming from a front room of the house, exclaiming that a fire had started in the house, located off of McDuff and Commonwealth.
Eight adults and children were able to escape, then realized the infant was still inside. The blaze reportedly spread quickly, and the child's mother was overcome with smoke as she tried to run back inside and save her little boy.
Firefighters arrived on-scene, and a firefighter also received minor injuries as he attempted to pull the child from the fire. Unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful. The fire was put out quickly, but the child died at the scene.
Investigators are now analyzing what burned to discover what started the fire. A spokesperson for Jacksonville Fire and Rescue says it does not appear that fire detectors were working at the time of the blaze.
