A St. Johns County teenager who was attempting to avoid hitting an animal instead crashed into a tree and died.

Police say 18 year-old Charles "Trey" Brantley III was on Racetrack Road near State Road 13 this morning when he swerved to avoid a dead animal in the road.

The teen's car hit a tree nearly head-on and he died on scene.

Brantley is the son of Detective Charles "Kip" Brantley.

Investigators say the younger Brantley was wearing a seatbelt and speed was not a factor in the crash.

According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, Brantley would have entered his senior year at Bartram Trail High School this fall and was enrolled in the business academy at the school.

He was on his way to work at the Vystar Credit Union in Fruit Cove when the crash occurred.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
