Boeing Expands At Cecil
This time it is Boeing that wants to move more of its operations to the airport.
Lindsey Ballas with the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission says Boeing will be doing maintenance on fighter jets.
"They are going to be engaged in some maintenance, modification and structural and composite repair of FA-18s," Ballas said.
The move means about 60 jobs and several million dollars in construction work at the center, but more importantly Ballas says it furthers their plans for redevelopment of the old Navy base.
"We are very dedicated to redevelopment of Cecil Commerce Center and this is directly in line with our goals for Cecil," Ballas said.
Boeing is combining the Arizona and Jacksonville FA-18 repair facilities into one unit based in Jacksonville. They say the move will save money.
"We are always looking for ways to reduce costs for our customer, and operating one facility instead of two does just that," said Larry Sellman, Boeing's director of F/A-18 Product Support.
"We value the work the team has done at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway, but this difficult decision made the most business sense for the customer and our organization."
The move will happen in phases over the next year.
