Insurance Group Pitches 'Bold New Solution' To Hurricane Insurance
A consumer insurance group pitches a new idea to address florida's hurricane protection.
The state's catastrophe fund is dangerous underfunded, and would probably not be able to handle a major hurricane strike.
Dan Montgomery with the group Shield Our State says they have a plan to fix that by setting up a fund for insurers to put their premiums.
"Instead of going out of state, stay in the state and they stay in a tax-exempt fund," Montgomery said.
He thinks neither private companies nor the state can handle it alone.
"But through a new partnership of each, we can deal with the problem, effectively, efficiently and affordable for Floridians," Montgomery said.
He estimates that the fund could collect 5-billion dollars a year, strictly to pay hurricane damage claims. If a storm does not hit, than that money would stay and build up to handle future storms.
