New Surveillance Aircrafts to be Homebased at NAS Jax

The Navy's top officials have just approved NAS Jax for a fleet of P-8As.
"They're our newest aircraft in the Navy and it's replacing an aircraft that's been around for nearly 40 years, the P-3," says Lt. Commander John Daniels. "I think that it's going to be a welcome asset to the Navy."
Forty-two of the aircrafts are expected to arrive in Jacksonville by 2012, along with several personnel to operate them. Daniels says that will add another economic boost to the River City.
The new aircrafts are shaped like a Boeing 737, but with military capabilities.
"It's primary mission is surveillance, mostly for submarines in the water, but it also has some capabilities where we can do surveillance on land," Daniels added.
He also says noise and environmental concerns by the public were also addressed before the move was approved.
