Duval School's Budget Cuts Will Impact Classroom, Spokesperson Says

There will still be negative impacts to the classroom, even if the best budget is laid out by the Duval County School Board.

That's according to the Board's Spokesperson, Jill Johnson, who says they're currently facing a $140-million shortfall for the upcoming school year.

"Unfortunately, we're not going to be able to not impact the classroom at all. That's what we're worried about right now, is really focussing on students and the classroom and what we can do to preserve the educational environment for our kids," says Johnson.

Tallahassee lawmakers have just announced that they plan to cut nearly half a billion dollars from Florida schools, and Duval stands to lose over $17-million.

Johnson says the district is looking at a variety of options to help cut costs. Among them, reducing the school day from eight class periods to seven. As well as possibly cutting funding for school sports, the arts and other school activities. School Board Member Brenda Priestly-Jackson says they also can't guarantee that all teaching positions will be safe.

Johnson says three schools were also considered for consolidation to save money during the tight economic time. "There are three schools right now they're looking at potentially consolidating and closing and putting them into other schools: Wesconnett Elementary School, West Jacksonville Elementary School and Finegan Elementary School. So those are the three schools they'll really be talking about as far as potential closures."

But during a Tuesday night public hearing, Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals decided that that there was not enough reason in favor of shutting down Finegan and West Jacksonville. The fate of Wesconnett is still undecided.

For the current budget year, the state is also cutting the following amount from other local districts:

Baker County School District: Loss of $680,638

Bradford County School District: Loss of $477,011

Clay County School District: Loss of $4,942,018

Flagler County School District: Loss of $1,747,625

Nassau County School District: Loss of $1,534,117

Putnam County School District: Loss of $1,544,727

St. Johns County School District: Loss of $3,958,752

Union County School District: Loss of $311,245
