Sailor Admits Assaulting Detainee in Iraq
Petty Officer 2nd Class Adam White pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and one count of assault stemming from an incident at Camp Bucca, Iraq earlier this year. During his testimony inside an NAS Jax courtroom, White said he repeatedly kicked a detainee along with two other sailors after the detainee spit on a guard at the detention center.
"We knew what we were going to do was unlawful, but we dit it anyway," White said. "I lost my temper and my emotions got the better of me becuase I was given the opportunity."
A military judge sentenced White to 89 days in jail, a rank reduction, loss of pay and a possible discharge from the Navy.
Four other sailors, including White's supervisor at Camp Bucca, are facing assault and conspiracy charges for their roles in the alleged abuse at the detention center on May 14, 2008. Three sailors, including Mayport-based Seaman Trevor Slane, pleaded not guilty to all their charges earlier this week at NAS Jacksonville.
Chief Petty Officer Tracy Necaise was the focus of an Article 32 hearing this week. Similar to a civilian grand jury investigation, the Article 32 could yield serious charges and a long jail term for the Navy Chief.
Navy prosecutors argue Necaise ordered four junior sailors to viciously beat two detainees after the prisoners spit and threw feces at guards.
"He told us to 'teach them a lesson' and 'kick the [expletive] out of them,'" White said during his sentencing Friday.
Navy reports also indicate Necaise left several detainees in an unventialted cell filled with pepper spray over night. A judge will make a recommendation of if the evidence warrants a general court martial for Necaise. The final decison will be made in several weeks by the Naval Forces Central Command.
Seaman Slane and Petty Officers 2nd Class Jonathan Armstrong and Thomas Broadway will face courts martial early next year.
White is expected to testify against the others during their trials.
