Duval County Public School officials are conducting a comprehensive district wide review.  A hot topic that's being considered is consolidation which means some schools could close.

"There's six or seven schools, district wide now, that are included in some scenarios that could involve consolidation," says Chief Operating Officer Doug Ayers.

Ayers says overall about 40 percent of schools are in some sort of scenario that would go through changes "whether it's boundary changes or potential consolidation".

He says if the changes are made they would be unprecedented for the Duval County.

Ayers will make recommendations based on community input and collected data to Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals. Pratt-Dannals will make tentative recommendations to the board in November and final recommendations in January.  The board will vote on those recommendations no later than February.

What others are saying

  • Duval Schools: Boundary Changes And Consolidation Considered
Lately, school board has been putting through a lot of changes without complete interactions with citizens of Duval County. Such a measure as considered should have at least one or more public hearings and if deemed necessary by the Citizens of Duval, to be on ballot and be voted upon. Education is vital to Jacksonville: For the students, families, businesses, social well-being, and last but not the least, business recruitment attracting many economic infusion into our city. The School Board needs to put forth the efforts to help teachers teach with systemic changes on discipline and criteria to weed out students who are disruptive to the education process. It is our duty and responsibility to educate all students. Education is not free; we the taxpayers are paying for it. Students having difficulties in learning, having background issues prohibiting them from learning should be allowed unending chances to learn no matter what and how. Students trying to stop others to learn is another matter.
