No One Injured Following JaxPort Crane Collapse

A single crane weighs 950 tons, reaches just under 150 feet and costs $6-million. The cranes are used to move containers from ships to the back of a semi-tractor trailer.
It would take an aggressive gust of wind to force the equipment to the ground, but JaxPort officials believe a wind sheer as strong as 60 miles per hour came at the cranes at the right angle.
Severe weather was moving through the northside when a cranes collapsed around 3:30pm. It destroyed a second crane, and damaged at least one more. The debris was as tall as a five-story building.
Jacksonville Fire and Rescue was among the many agencies to response. Finding no one was injured, JaxPort officials and structural engineers have already began their investigation. The clean-up effort could take three-to-five days.
Only the day before this incident, JaxPort and a number of agencies were testing their emergency response plan. Authorities credit the effort for a successful response.
Despite the collapse, JaxPort officials don't expect the incident to slow business at Blount Island.
What others are saying
- crappy craneagree with ond but they will most likely get a raise because no one was killed
- Really, the city buys those cranes down there? I'm surprised. Let the terminal buy them.
- Watch out Jacksonville, here come the NEW container crane fees in next years property tax bills!
- I'm amazed by this story. Incompancey brought down these cranes and now the taxpayers are going to have to pay to replace them. The machines should of been tied down prior to the high winds arriving. We watched the machine on the right sail down the track and hit the others then fall. Someone should be fired! Like JEA Jaxport is a joke! Let private enterprise provide the equipment in the future not the ciy.
