Corey Captures the State Attorney's Office

Corey beat chief assistant state attorney Jay Plotkin by a nearly two-to-one margin in Tuesday's vote to become the first newly-elected State Attorney in the fourth judicial circuit in 17 years.
"The fact that it's this overwhelming is the public making a statement that they want to see new momentum like this in the State Attorney's office," Corey told reporters at her victory party. "I think you guys will be pleased in what we have to present as far as our structure and the way we'll conduct business in the office."

Corey earned the early endorsements of all three Sheriffs in the district and the largest police union in Northeast Florida. Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford believes Corey is ready to lead a prosecutors' office that often leads the state in death penalty cases.
"This community wants the police and the State Attorney's office working together to go after [the bad guys,]" Rutherford said.
Chief Assistant State Attorney Jay Plotkin was humble in his concession, telling supporters "I have full confidence Ms. Corey cares about the people of the community and will do the right thing."
Plotkin offered his help in the four-months long transition period before Corey takes over the post. Shorstein also offered his support.
"I've got four more months and I intend to work as hard as I can everyday for the last four months," Shorstein told reporters at Plotkin's campaign party. "But I'll do everything within my power to help Ms. Corey in her transition."
Shorstein actually showed up at Corey's party at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, only to be turned away by her supporters. Shorstein said he simply wanted to congratulate her in person and offer any help she may need.
