Schools Could Turn To JEA for Funding Help
Duval County Schools has expressed interest in striking deal similar to the one the city has, where JEA pays them a fee based on how much business they do.
JEA pays nearly 100-million dollars into the city's general coffers.
JEA CEO Jim Dickenson says he understands the school's point of view, but this would not be a plan he would support.
"We're experience cost increases now based on our business. We are not, naturally, looking for other ways to spend our money," Dickenson said.
He says they are tax-exempt in order to provide the lowest prices possible.
He also points out that his is not the only tax exempt organization the city.
The mayor's office also stands against the plan saying that this is a special deal and not paid in lieu of property taxes.
We were unable to reach the schools for comment.
