Mayor, Sheriff Address Weekend Crime
A rash of weekend violence has brought the mayor and the sheriff to speak out against the violence.
"And I can tell you this is evidence of the war of violence that is being perpetrated on the citizens of Jacksonville," sheriff John Rutherford said at a Monday afternoon press conference.
He called for more cops and more community involvement to help tamp down crime in the river city. He says the city will need a comprehensive approach to get crime under control.
Mayor John Peyton also spoke and called on city council to pass his budget without taking out any of the more than 30 million dollars in crime fighting plans.
"The challenge is to pass it comprehensively and intact," Peyton said.
He says the budget is modeled on plans from the Jacksonville Journey, which is a group of citizens and city leaders that the mayor pulled together to develop an anti-crime plan
He says this budget represents a comprehensive approach to fighting crime and called the investment "historical".
Four people died violently over the weekend, including a teenager and one who was shot by police.
A fifth person was stabbed and remains in the hospital.
