JEA Increases Water Bills
Less than a dozen JEA customers spoke up to protest a 4.1% increase to their water bill at a Tuesday morning public hearing. Within minutes, the seven board members unanimously approved the rate hike.
"We have calculated that it will be about $2.25 per month for the average residential user," says JEA's Chief Financial Officer Paul McElroy.
He says the over $10-million that the agency will collect will cover the cost of maintaining their water treatment facilities and their infraustructure.
McElroy says tough economic times are falling on taxpayers and businesses, a like. In fact, JEA officials report that they're facing a $10.6-millon shortfall without the $2.25 increase to your water bill. Rising fuel costs and inflation are also expected to lead to additional rate increases in the coming years.
This is the second JEA rate increase in the past few months. The board also approved an additional $15 fee for your electricity use back in May. The greater fees could have households paying an additional $25 a month.
Less than a dozen angry JEA customers spoke out at Tuesday's public hearing. Floyd Carrow was among the outspoken and he found it suspicious that Mayor John Peyton was able to fund the $36-million worth of public safety initiatives for the Jacksonville Journey without increasing fees in the upcoming budget, but - at the same time - JEA is raising fees. The agency is expected to add $210.6-million to the city's budget. Carrow says that comes off looking like a "back-door approach" to funding the mayor's anti-crime proposals.
The increases won't hit your bill until October.
What others are saying
- JEA Second price hikeJEA is supposed to be NON Profit, but I would be interested in seeing their financial records, which I will now be looking into. (public record, correct?) It's outrageous when your electric bill is about 1/4 the cost of your mortgage or rent. With their price hikes, gas prices and rising cost of food, I had to move out of a 4 bedroom house into a 2 bedroom condo with 3 children and a wife. Now it seems I am going to have to move into a cracker jack box to survive. Our family conserves as much as possible. It's really hard to cut back any more. Maybe I should cut back on food and let my kids starve to death. We don't go out, we don't spend money frivolously (we don't have it to spend) and my wife and I work 40 plus hours a week to survive. I see a bad future. Next will be the rising amount of unemployment, rising welfare costs and soon, if it doesn't change, a broken country that won't be able to survive. Careful, people, look forward and tell me what you see.
- JEAIf the JEA had not expanded into St. Johns, Clay and Nassau Counties maybe they would not have to spend such a large amount for interest on the money they had to borrow to go into these other counties. My suggestions is to sell the assets and customers in the other counties and reduce our rates. By expanding into other counties they have caused them to have to add more generating capacity for which they chose natural gas fired turbines, the most expensive way to produce electrictiy.
