Is a Tax Swap Good for Florida?

A tax swap plan on this fall's ballot is shaping up to be a major issue this fall.

If approved by the voters...amendment five would replace the portion of your property  taxes that goes to schools with a one cent sales tax hike.

This has education groups, like the Florida Education Association, crying foul.

Representative Frank Attkisson says a wise legislature can make it work.

"This is specifically going in the constitution that says you will hold education harmless," Attkisson said.

He says the current property tax system is out of date and the sales tax system will provide a better way of funding Florida schools.

"The one penny sales tax is just an option.  There are another menu of options to make up the difference.  We're not trying to short change schools at all. We're going to fund them but we're going to fund them with a much more dynamic economically strong activity," Atkisson said.

But The Florida Education Association says the plan leaves schools in limbo.

"It's one of those things were, they've left the commitment as vague as possible," said Mark Pudlow with the FEA.

The move would save homeowners about 9-billion dollars but the sales tax hike is only expected to bring in about 3-billion.

It will be up for a vote this fall.

Where did I hear just recently something similar to this? I know, we voted to change our property taxes proposed by the Govenor which was a great idea To help the people of Florida out with money until the local government decided to make up new fees and raise everything else to make up for the loss. Sorry, I just don't trust them.

please read what you print prior tp posting it. You stated "A tax swap plan on this fall's ballot is shaping up to be a major issue this fall." While this is ok you start the next sentence with "if approved by the voters...amendment five would replace the portion of your property taxes that goes to schools with a one cent."
First the "if" should be capitalized and "a one cent." what? I am terible at spelling and I hate grammer but this is just to hard to read.

    Thanks
    Sandy
