City, FEMA Update Jacksonville Flood Maps

With historic flooding gripping portions of Iowa and the threat of Atlantic hurricanes looming, federal and Jacksonville engineers are taking a closer look at decades old flood maps.

"The current maps are approximately 20 years old," city engineer Bill Joyce tells WOKV. "Technology has gotten a lot better and maps need to be more well-defined."

Joyce says today's mapping utilizes digital scanning technology that will give planners a better idea of how severe flooding can be in traditionally water-logged neighborhoods.

"It's truly just to get a more accurate map so we can tell those living in the flood plane."

Homeowners inside the newly-defined flood plane may end up paying more for flood insurance, however FEMA officials say the National Flood Insurance Program can provide relief.

Plenty of work remains. Joyce hopes to roll out preliminary maps sometime next year and publish the updated flood zones by the winter of 2010.
